Local Law Enforcement !!!
Raffi This will be my first time at Sturgis. I'm fired up and can't wait! I've been to Daytona Bike week several times. The cops out there are very cool and don't bother the bikers. They don't even seem to care about open containers. I'm being told Sturgis is a whole different story. Is it true the Sturgis law pulls bikes over for apes? What the fuck! We're bringing more money than Christmas. 2/25/10 10:46 AM
woody well, they won't have a problem relieving you of a little of it....you'll see'em on foot, horseback, golf cart and patrol cars. 2/25/10 2:59 PM
wheels Raffi...there are alot of apes out there so not everyone gets pulled over but they get a good percentage. It just leaves you open to gettin stopped. The last time I went with apes I got pulled over. Now let me say this...I'm in law enforcement and this guy was still a dick to me! The apes I had on were absolutely within the law. I told him so...so he has me get on the bike, he squats down to get a good angle and then tells me that they are 1/4" too high. We have a few words, after which I tell him I can lower 'em. He has me loosen 'Em up and pull 'em down to about my nipples! Had to ride to the campground with my arms all bent up against my chest! So much for safety! LOL 2/25/10 3:39 PM
Raffi Wheels...So much for professional couresy. I've got a dozen friends who work for the LAPD, and I even have a get out of jail free card. It blows my mind to hear about guys like the one you've described. One cop like that makes everyone look bad. Maybe we'll meet out there and go for a ride. I'll be sure to leave my drugs at home. :-) Thanks for the info and the heads up. I'll take your advice, and do the apes when I get back. My friend who is going with me is borrowing my '70 FLH, which has 18" apes. I'll wish him luck. 2/25/10 5:05 PM
wheels He might be fine...it's just luck of the draw! There are tons of bikes with apes, some get pulled and some don't. I just prefer not to have to deal with it any more. I bring the bagger instead, now. 2/26/10 3:36 PM
el-guapo Raffi, as I mentioned in my constructive criticism post, I was pulled over for doing 4 miles an hour over the speed limit coming from the Spoke to town at 8:00AM! I got a warning BUT he put me in the car to check if I smelled like booze or pot so he could search my bike and give me the DUI test. He was nice about it though...was even a fellow rider. I've been to Daytona a bunch; this is like Daytona x 1000 for the amount of police and pull overs I'd seen. Do yourself a huge favor; if you have one drink do not run apes, run stop signs ( MUST stop with both feet on the ground) or over accelerate. But have a good time!!! It's a good reason to stay somewhere like the spoke or other large venue, so you can party and stay out of jail. 3/4/10 5:59 AM
woody the spoke also had a bus that ran on the hour back and forth to sturgis. the downside was that it would quit running at 10 pm. one of the ladies at the check-in gave me a card w/ a taxi phone number on it in case i stayed in town later than the spoke's bus ran. i believe she said 5 bucks a person would get you back to the spoke. i never used the taxi but did find myself being let off in front of the bs saloon in town though. kudos to the spoke for this service! 3/4/10 7:46 AM
RideAndPlay So long as the local LE is not roaming the campground, we'll be happy. In '08 at the Chip, we had some fun with a Secret Service agent who hung around in plain clothes after the John McCain campaign stop. Amy asked him if she could have been arrested when she flashed McCain; he said, "Oh we don't arrest for flashing!" We have some fun pics of him pretending to arrest her in her fishnet and pasties. 3/4/10 9:09 AM
street-glide Raffi one bit of info you really need to know is that from the main road into town to the BS camp is watch your speed dude the cops were busting people right & left for speeding. Usually it's 55 on the rode out but the change it to 35 for about a mile or two and they don't mess around. I'd like to know how much money they made on this small stretch of road for that week. And one things for damn sure don't drink and ride because you'll have to get a second mortgage to get out of jail and get your bike back. They have 0 tolerance for that. All I can say is I had the time of my life out there and some of the best riding I've every been on and I can't wait to go back. 3/11/10 1:59 PM
Red Baron I don't know, what all the fuzz is about. can say ,been through some crazy shit at bike meets overseas and the way i see it,play by the rules and play harder, way harder, where there are none ! 3/12/10 4:38 AM
Raffi Thanks for all the great feed back. 83 days to go. I'm fired up and ready hit the road today! 5/17/10 4:55 PM
Raffi We decided to keep the apes on the bike, and plan to do all the drinking after the rides. Curious, but fired up. See y'all in 7 days.. 7/27/10 2:54 PM
